Jokowi Mulls Over Central or East Kalimantan as New Capital City

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo or Jokowi mentioned two provinces as the options that will be the home for the new capital city.
“East Kalimantan and Central Kalimantan,” said the President during a special interview with Tempo on Monday, August 19.
The President said there were several reasons for the relocation of the administrative center–including economic equality, natural disasters, urban planning, and spatial planning.
“We are here [in Jakarta] threatened by earthquakes, floods, land shift, congestion, and air pollution,” said the former governor of Jakarta. However, he could not yet decide the exact location for the new capital city.
He said that the relocation of the administrative center is an urgent matter. Even President Soekarno had planned for the capital relocation.
Previously, President Jokowi officially stated that he will relocate the capital to Kalimantan Island during his state speech in the House of Representatives (DPR) building, on Friday, August 16.
“I hereby request permission and support to relocate our state’s capital city to Kalimantan Island,” he said before governmental boards' members and national figures.
